Her father worked in the Hawks Nest Tunnel and died of silicosis in 1932 when Edie was 3. Her mother died two years later, and Edie was raised by a neighbor, Quindora Quinny Burdette. Edie worked at Sam Dalportos Italian grocery store, the College Drug Store, and G.C. Murphys. She is also a self-taught pianist.
