["A ginseng digger and cultivator since he was young, Ed Daniels and his wife Carole own and operate Shady Grove Farm in Randolph County where they grow ginseng, goldenseal, ramps, cohosh, and industrial hemp, among other plants. In this interview, Ed and Carole talk about their forest farming and seed saving practice, the hopes for their farm, and Eds family tradition of medicinal herbs. ["Leenie Hobbie (b. December 28, 1960, Alexandria, VA) is an herbalist in Kirby (Rio post office box) in Hampshire County, West Virginia. Hobbie has been a family herbalist for over 30 years, originally learning the tradition from her grandmother, who used both garden-grown and wild harvested plants at her home in the mountains of Southwestern Virginia. She has studied with acclaimed herbalists across the country and has taught the tradition within her community in Hampshire County. Hobbie led an apprenticeship in traditional Appalachian herbalism Falcone. Hobbie has been a family herbalist for over 30 years, originally learning the tradition from her grandmother, who used both garden-grown and wild harvested plants at her home in the mountains of Southwestern Virginia. ["For the past 6 years, Sandy Mashburn (b. January 20th, 1954, Albertville, AL) and her husband Tommy Mashburn come to West Virginia for 3 months from August-October to hunt root, including ginseng, may apple, yellow root, and black cohosh. They sell the foraged root and other plant parts to Tony Coffman at Coffmans Metals in Birch River, West Virginia. ["Henry Rice was born in Helvetia, West Virginia in 1978. He is the daughter of Catherine Irene Mailloux and grand-daughter of Eleanor Mailloux, the co-founder of the Hutte. His daughter, Morgan Rice, was also interviewed for this project. Henry Rice cooks for the Hutte Sunday buffet, and works in construction. ["Morgan Rice was born in Helvetia, West Virginia in 1999. She is the daughter of Hutte cook Henry Rice, and great-granddaughter of town matriarch and co-founder of the Hutte restaurant, Eleanor Mailloux. Ms. Rice is a member of the Helvetia Farm Womens Club and works part-time as a waitress at the Hutte restaurant.
